It does not matter if it is gold seal or not, it can still have done 100000 miles and be knackered.

You should be able to tell from your engine number as BMC gold seal A-series engines have the prefix 8G

Josh, it may well have been a gold seal engine but that could have been 40 years ago. As I've already told you the engine number on your block is a reconditioners specific number and does not relate in any way to a gold seal, silver seal or any other seal! Once maybe but since used and reconned again. Don't get hung up on it mate ....

Gold was an official BMC fully reconditioned unit. The others may have been 'unofficial' - perhaps after BMC stopped the Gold system. Never heard of 'blue' until a couple of weeks ago!

I believe that gold seal was a complete exchange recon engine ie block and head, silver seal was an exchange recon block only.
I would repaint the engine in its original green anyway

with that set up you dont need the rocker cover with the breather, its got the closed circuit breather already fitted.

If it's not absolutely the correct shade of 'gold' it won't work - the engine won't be reconditioned!

This happened to me, engine just wouldn't start I stripped it down and renewed many bits including all the electrics, the recently painted engine looked a bit messy after this work so I repainted it again, this time with the correct shade of green. Lo and behold after putting it back it started first time!
