Just got home after taking the old girl out for lunch! It was all going so nicely until... started missing & then wouldn't run. I have checked: fuel, plenty in the float bowl & pump working, spark? yep (although not what I'd call impressive), points look ok, voltage on the l.t. side of the coil about the same as battery (11.6- a bit low but could be my uncalibrated meter). Rad's full of water, tiny bit of mayo at the oil filler but that probably 'cos she hasn't been used in months. She starts and runs sometimes but then starts to miss badly & gives up. Any ideas? Dodgy electrical connection?
Substitute one thing at a time starting off with the cheapest until you find out which was causing the problem.
First thing check the points gap, they can close to almost nothing and still give a spark, then they give up.
Condensor on order. I'll keep you posted. On another subject, anyone know how I swap my old & tatty locking petrol cap for my shiny new one? How do I get the old collar of the filler pipe. It seems to be fitted with 3 rivets whereas the new cast alloy one has one self tapping screw. I can post some photos if that helps.

Great minds think alike, this is a job I need to do when i get my car back from the garage, so any advice would be appreciated.
I'd vote for condensor (usually worse when hot, especially starting).
Have you cleaned (and gapped as suggested) the points though, especially if it's stood for a while, a quick rub with wet and dry usually cleans any rubbish off them.

I vote for this too - use a 2nd had distributer of an 80's Nissan (just get the right type), change the feed dog, do some filing and off you go. I will admit the old distributer is in the boot in case of breakdown, but Olive hasn't run this well in years (or it may be I am bad at gapping points )
