Rear axle breather

Post by rovermorris999 »

I had my '68 van rear axle off a while back to have new spring locating brackets welded on. The elderly chap who did the work was an ex-Morris mechanic and he pointed out two small breather holes at either end of the axle casing somewhere near the spring brackets. He recommended keeping them clear with using a piece of wire as if they get blocked it can contribute towards oil leaks. These are not to be confused with the big plastic breather near the centre of the axle. Having sprayed wax all over the place the other day I thought I'd better clean them out. Could I find them? No.
Was I dreaming the whole thing? If not, where are they? Am I going mad?

I think they are under the ends of the axle around the rear wheel bearings, I believe they are not for axle breathing but to let out oil should the seal fail in an effort to prevent it getting on the brake linings.
