Series ll speedo

When I acquired my '54 series ll, the engine and gearbox had been changed for a 948cc unit. This must have a different ratio for the pick up from the gearbox because the speedo had been modified to take the innards from a later minor (central speedo). This meant that a hole had to be cut in the face above the shaft so that the mileometer can be seen. The trouble with this is that it leaves an ugly hole beneath the shaft where the old miles were read.

Does anyone know a way around this problem - I got a series ll speedo from eBay, but it over-reads hopelessly. The speedo face has the number 1000 on it, which I presume is turns per mile, were there any made with the higher ratio, which I think is 1700 or so?

the diff effects the speed reading also. not sure what diff you have there. ive put a 948 in a 803 split screen and the reading was high. changing the diff sorted it out. if you have a 948 clock then it should match the engine/gearbox and give a reasonable reading. so are we looking at taking the diff out to find out which one it is. wait and see what other post say. may be Wille will pass around here. hes got speedos sorted

The trouble is, a 948 speedo would only come in the large centre mounted type, I think, mine is the smaller one, mounted in front of the driver!

I think I may do what racer suggested, I'm waiting for a quote. At least then I would be sure it was accurate in these times of speed cameras and points!

your minor cant be 54 if it has speedo infront of steering wheel. it may be registered late. 54/55 have central speedo. so you dont have the central bump for later speedo?

The speedo changed from in front of the driver to a central position
from October 1954. The recalibration of your own speedo seems
to be the best solution.

I'm considering fitting a 1098 gearbox to my SII (mid 1954). I already have changed the diff over (I know these rations).
The question I have, is the speedo sender ratio the same in the 805 & 1098 gearbox? If it isn't does anyone
know what the both the ratios are? I'll need this info when I get the speedo recalibrated.

I believe that if you turn one of the rear wheels one complete revolution and observe how many rotations the speedo cable turns (disconnected from the speedo obviously) the re-calibration companies can re-set the speedo, this takes into account all the ratios if you contact speedy cables or similar I am sure they can clarify the method.

If you do a seach on speedo recvalibration, there is a post wich gives links to JDO.
On their site is the instructions of what you need for recalibration - diff ratio etc.. isn't required.

FORBESQ...Crikey! Are you going to run an 803cc engine with a 4.22 diff
and a 1098 gearbox? You will find it a bit sluggish I think!

I'm waiting for JDO to get back to me, but his answering machine's mailbox is full, his mobile switched off and no reply from his e mail. I'll just have to be patient I suppose.........

I think I'll skip using their services thou, being in NZ.

I've got a 1000 in the old girl at the moment and a 1098 sitting on the garage floor in an unknown state (for use at a later date).
