Shall I, shan't I?

Post by Judge »

Many of you will never have seen Ellie, my early 1954 concours Series II saloon.

I say this because she has been safely tucked up in a Carcoon since returning from being on display at the NEC in 2000.

Here is a picture of her engine bay.

Now the question, do I recommision her, or sell her?

If you sell the car would you regret it afterwards?
Cars should not be kept in museums, they should be driven and enjoyed.
You would have to vet any potential new owner to make sure that they were able to keep the car in condition to which it has been accustomed.
Have you another car in mind to replace it?

I wouldn't think about it right now. If you sell, its not the right time of year and you may regret it next year (If we get a Summer). I'd recommision it, use it and then decide (Though being resistent to change, I'd end up keeping it).

It looks very nice and would be hard to replace.

How does a 'carcoon' work - does it not blow in damp air - or is the ingoing air dried befor entering ?
As for the 'selling' - depends entirely if you have a better use for the money!

Some good suggestions here, so having given it some further thought, I will have a good look at her when the weather warms up, and then decide. Perhaps by then they'll be offering more on the scrappage scheme

I had great difficulty preventing my wife from trading in my beloved TR7 under 'scrappage' last Friday!

AFAIK, used indoors, their only advantage over a conventional cover is that the car can be "put away" while wet, and it will dry as air is blown over it. After that, I can't see much advantage. I suppose you could modify one to use the output from a dehumidifier, and then it would be good.
As for the 'selling' - depends entirely if you have a better use for the money!
Or need the space. I'm not desperate for the cash I'd get selling the Midget, but I'd like the accessible garage space for something else - such as a Convertible, or a P5 as another wedding car.

Just a thought but the Cowley would go quite well with a Rover V8 under the bonnet.

Bill,

Personally, I'd recommission her and show her at least for one season before making a decision, but I very much doubt you'll ever get another like her.

I have never seen her or even a picture (except the engine bay)!
