Before I clean the engine and transmission off of all the years of grease and grime where would one look for the engine i.d. number?

Hi Steve
The engine no should be on the left hand side of the block looking at the engine from the front low down on a circular plate

On my later USHM3 engine (inc waterpump) it is also stamped into the top of the block at the very front of the engine, facing upwards. This is a factory recon unit.

Some engines have the circular disc at the back of the block on the flywheel housing.

Nice shot of your engine Rob!
After the caked on muddy, greasy stuff was removed, I found it to be on the bottom left hand side. I found that the engine is original according to the VIN plate number but the speedo indicated around 90k miles.

Mines at the back near the flywheel stamped on a plate.

it'll also depend if its a bmc replacement unit where itll be stamped
