Timing chain tensioner/ticking advice?

Post by racer »

I've been told a Marina t/chain tensioner will work on a duplex t/chain .I will need an A-Plus front plt,and t/chain cover ,cos it wont fit in my existing cover? Will the eng. mounts be the same? Also will need to drill /tap front plt. for tensioner ? Regarding the 'ticking' I was also told to check the run out (level)of the sprockets. Anyone know about this? cheers ,ROD

To check the run out I would suggest using a dial indicator attached to the front plate. Very unlikely the cranKshaft wheel is out but the camshaft sprocket is a little more easier to distort, I've done this myself when trying to remove when reneweing timing chain. Alignment between the two is checked with a straight edge placed accross the camshaft sprocket and extending to the crankshaft sprocket. Any discrepancies are adjusted by adding or removing thin shims to or from behind the crankshaft wheel.

The A-plus is better but if you go for a normal version with a duplex kit it is more than good enough, quieter and less prone to wear.

I think Ray means the A-plus front cover, tensioner and such, is a better set up than just the standard A cover with a duplex, but with the standard setup and duplex being fine enough as it is.

Oh ,now I see! I fitted the duplex to avoid noise ,stretching etc. but it appears to have worn quickly (ie if the ticking is actually this) I wondered whether it was mis-aligned ,therefore worn on the inner edge of the links causing it to move around sideways on the sprockets? When you listen with a screwdriver to the t/chain case it does sound similar to the ticking I'm getting .Really need to find out if the a-plus front cover etc will go on .
