My new Traveler

Post by cloud »

I am new to the site and I have just purchased a 1958 Morris Minor Traveler. I will be posting pictures today but first I have one question for now and many to follow.
The car did not come with a key, is there anyway to have a key made? there is a number on the front of the ignition switch FP 656 would this help or should I just get another keyed switch somewhere??

I am in the state of Connecticut in the USA. I was lucky in finding a LHD although I have had RHD jaguars and its not bad but would rather have the LHD.
The car will need a complete goiing thru but it is very solid especially the wood. The interior is good enough except the cushins need to be replaced, are they still being made??
Any help is appreciated and I will have many more question as I restore this little gem.??

Thanks,

Martin

Most Minor parts suppliers should stock spare keys. The key to the ignition switch is indeed FP 656, Great security! The door keys should be the same but may have been changed. I am not sure if the back doors have the same key or not. (My Traveller back doors had a different key). You will have to wait until you have the ignition key to find out. If you do not have a copy of Minor Matters I can supply some contact numbers. Buy a spare key as well.

Welcome. And yes, the cushions (or squabs and backs) are still being made by Newton Commercial in Suffolk (just Google them) and retailed by both them and most Minor Traders. If you join the MMOC, you'll get a regular magazine with adverts for most of the well known traders. You could also google for: "The Morris Minor Centre, Birmingham", "East Sussex Minors (ESM)", and "Leadbetters of Lancaster" to name but three. All parts can be shipped to USA.

The ignition locks are usually so worn - they will work with just about ANY key - or even a screwdriver!
