Its obvious the carb is at fault, for whatever reason, isn't it? The fact that it runs OK when the there is no oil in the damper or when the damper is released is clearly not correct.....

Don't buy a 'new' carb - just get 'another' carb!

Roy i really think you should write a book.

Perhaps called Running a Morris Minor on a shoestring.

It would sell millions.

right, tried to go to the auto jumble this morning, but the car got 10 yds down the road and gave up. pushed it back home (uphill) and now its sitting waiting for me to fix it.
first thing i am going to do is check plugs, leads, points, ignition timing and then once io have it going, sort out the fuel problems.
ahh the joys of classic motoring

somebody once did say to me that most fuel related problems turn out to actually be ignition. In my experience, it's been quite true, although not exclusively.

Is your fuel pump working properly?

Love the idea of a book about running a Minor on a shoestring. "The collected works of BMC Ecosse".

(actually I've probably got no choice but to run it on a shoestring! :D )

Can't remember where we have been before with this - but first a compression check - has that been done ? Are the plug leads definitely in the right order - 1342 anti-clock around the dizzy? If all ok - does it start and idle (all-be-it with no oil in the damper) ? If so, let it warm up - then swing the dizzy back and forth to get the best idle. Once that's done - adjust the carb mixture up and down - also to get the best idle. That really should be IT!

i think i may of cracked it,
i decided to go down the route of sledge hammer to crack a peanut.
so replaced the dizzy with spare, new points, new condensor, new rotor arm, tweaked the timing and hey presto, runs quite well.
still got to fix the exhust manifld joint, as it still keeps coming undone,

Well done! Hold the exhaust pipe up with a jack - clean the clamp carefully (or use a new one) and use new bolts with brass nuts. just a smear of exhaust paste - it should be fine.

And clean behind the shouldered part of the manifold thoroughly, as per another recent post, there can be a build up of old firegum there, which ages and can end up looking like rusty metal, ie as if it should be there!

Good point, a little needle file is easy to get down there. Cleaning it makes a big difference to how long the exhaust stays tight.

Well done. Do you know which bit made it work better? (Does it matter  at least it runs well now!)
