Sidevalve Engine CRANKSHAFT

Post by spike_esq »

Can you help find me a replacement crankshaft for my 1949 MM lowlight sidevalve engine. Sadly the existing crankshaft is way past it's best. I am searching for a standard shaft or one with very little existing machining. So get searching through your garage and outbuildings to see what you can turn up. This will be going to a very good home.
Look forward to your replies.

Welcome to the forum - there was a complete SV engine on ebay a couple of weeks ago - I don't think it sold!

You beat me to it! Well done. I was just looking it up.
He has some other items for sale - these brake drums and backplates would be excellent upgrade for anyone with 7" brakes - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Morris-Minor-Fron ... 3a55778a75 so could well be worth contacting him to see if he still has the SV engine.

Thanks for the replies. I had a look at this one on ebay as suggested and it was not sold. Seems it has been hooked up to a generator (ex military). I am also reliably informed that the the rear crankshaft oil seal arrangement is different and therefore the crank may not be suitable for a normal block.
Can any of you experts verify this?? Thanks.

I would have to see the crankshaft to know. The normal crankshaft has a scroll type rear oil seal, the military engine has a proper oil seal. I will have to take the sump off my generator engine to check.
All the ex military engines I've seen are USHM3 type not USHM2. The cylinder head refered to which is normally fitted to the generator engine is almost the same as the head on a President tractor or a Vedette marine engine.

It would be worth grabbing it anyway - if the price is right!

Is your crank too far gone to be saved?
I've got a Morris 8E engine, complete, but I think the crank is weaker although has the correct rear seal arrangement. If you get reeeeealy stuck I have a completely reconditioned '49MM engine with unleaded seats plus a later USHM3 recon engine in bits. You'd need to be reeeealy desperate to want to buy them off me.
Best to try E-bay for a while.

Re-reading the advert for the MM block, I get the impression that he is selling an MM block and crank but a generator sump etc. It this case, it might be worth buying for the crank.
