Engine revs slow to die down

Post by SvMinor »

Just after refitting the engine(replaced crank and bearings)the revs dont stop straight after releasing accelerator pedal.
It takes maybe 4/5 seconds to stop revving.
Is this normal.

Also with engine running then depress clutch pedal and release again
there is a noise like someting spinning(clutch/flywheel)
Depress the clutch and hold it in then you dont hear the noise.
Cant remember if the engine was like this before removal from the car.

Any Ideas

Cheers Mark

Throttle cable sticking ? Need to check if the carb goes straight back to idle position when you release the pedal. Quite often the cable starts to 'unravel' if it has been disturbed. Simplest repair is to substitute a bike inner brake cable.
Spinning noise - is there enough free play in the clutch pedal - and is the return spring fitted ok ? ?

I didnt completely remove the throttle cable,I took out the split pins, and left the cable in the barrels that attach to the throttle linkage on the carb
Return spring is fitted also.how much free play should there be in the clutch

As long as there is 'some' - about 1 " should be enough. Maybe the throttle return spring isn't set strongly enough to pull the throttle closed ?
Are you SURE there was an oilite bush in the crank tail ? I asked before but didn't get an answer!

Bronze spiggot bush that fits inside the hole in the centre of the flywheel and crankshaft. It supports the end of the shaft from the gearbox. Stick your finger in to check that it is there.

Sintered bronze bush - impregnated with oil - supports the end of the gearbox input shaft. http://www.morrisminorspares.net/shop_item.php?ID=1984 Oilite being the 'trade' name for the usual supplier of these bushes - although we also made them at Glacier!

I take it this bush just slides up inside the rear of the crank.does it need oiled or greased before or after fitting.

Engine out again then

Yes - it's a snug fit in the crank tail. And usually it would be soaked at least overnight on engine oil beforehand. I would have thought Bully would have fitted one in the crank they supplied you (or at least warned you that you would need one!) - have you asked them ?
