Exhaust - 2 piecs stainless - droop
Hi,
Your collected wisdom is needed......
I've fitted a 2 piece stainless exhaust to my 1098 cc Minor. The fitting was straightforward, but the down pipe keeps dropping - just a fraction - but enough that it just rattles on the bulkhead cutout.
I guess that the stainless is much heavier than the mild steel - there's a long unsupported stretch near the manifold and some torque on the manifold.
Any suggestions for a better fitting?
Has anyone fitted another stap (on the bulkhead)?
Any suggestions for curing the droop?
Cheers,
Colin

In my experience exhausts are never a good fit on the Morris. I fitted an additional support just under the passenger seat to lift my exhaust a fraction to avoid it rattling against the car body as it exits the engine bay. Seems to have worked so far.
Just a simple hanging bracket with a U clamp from my local factor but also available from Halfords etc.
On one accasion after an engine swap my engine steady bar (cylinder head to just under the battery box) wasn't adjusted correctly so I adjusted this a fraction and this also helped to alter the angle of the exhaust and stop the rattling.

There is a thread somewhere regarding fitting a bracket from the downpipe to the gearbox bellhousing (Don't fit to the bulkhead as it would restrict movement with the engine and break the downpipe). However, I would look at why the exhaust is moving. Is it the downpipe to manifold flange that is working loose or are your engine mounts allowing too much engine movement? It is not a symptom of a stainless exhaust as far as I know.....

this is one of my previous topics and it has a nice picture of a bracket on the bell housing

Thanks guys,
The exhaust was supported by the scissor jack as I fitted it.
The Stainless reference is the fact that it's about twice the weight of the mild steel one - as it's supported only at the manifold and the 2 straps (fore and aft of the rear axle), there's a torque needed from the exhaust manifold clamp to stop the turning.
It started with a couple of inches of clearance, but this morning it's down to about 1/2 inch - so it rattles...
hance the comment about slow droop...
If the mounts were extra soft (or the steady bar not tight) then I could see it would rattle, but should return to the mid-point with the engine turned off (or am I missing something else)?
Looks like another Saturday morning under the bonnet - preferably whan it's sunny & dry!
