Are you sure the bleed nipple didn't just break off? Seems more likely than something preventing fluid getting through, given the pressures involved. If there had been "an airlock", pressing the pedal with the bleed nipple open (or removed) would have cleared it. My money is on seized cylinders and contaminated linings, either by brake fluid, because cylinders can seize and leak at the same time, or back axle oil. They smell, feel, and taste quite different.
Now we're not really recomending that people 'taste' axle oil or brake fluid, are we? (It's bad enough getting the occasional mouthful of petrol when syphoning!)

"You'll eat a peck o' muck afore you die".
Perhaps better not drink too much of it. Or of anything, really. But how else do you check whether it's your heater matrix, windscreen seal, or incontinent cat that's making your carpets wet?
Thanks all - I've got my list together!! No I didn't taste it just looked black so I assumed oil Bleed nipple didn't break off just undid it till it fell off! Hopefully will get it all back together over the weekend.
Pretty obviously - the nipple did just shear off and that's why no fluid came out! New cylinders and new shoes - and I suggest new pipes for the axle too because they WILL shear off - and since you need one new nipple - may as well get the pair. Note - these are the 3/8" BSF thread nipples. If you can't get the sheared nipple out - you will need a new 'banjo' too!
I think it sheared! Could be description of 'undoing until it fell off' - as it twisted like liquorice! Can't see otherwise why no fluid would come out.
Charlie had a look at the weekend and it certainly looks like cylinders. Fluid came out of the pipe when "he" pressed the pedal so that looks ok!! Got the bits including half shaft gasket and oil seal so should be fixed soon
