Re fitting flywheel

Ive got the engine set at tdc.
it says in the manual refit flywheel so that marks on 1/4 on the flywheel periphery are at the top.
ive looked for 1/4 fraction sign but I dont see it.
Is there another mark on the flywheel that i should look for.if so what does it look like.
a picture would help.
Or does it really matter what way the flywheel is fitted.

There are mark only 4 possible poitions for the flywheel you might find a amark at the top of it in one of these positions.

But I've just checked on a 1098 flywheel in the garage and there isn't a visable mark on it. I don't suppose it's behind the ring gear is it? That would be a really stupid place for it.

i saw a mark on the flywheel on th face that mates with the end of the crank.but it looks like a cut from a chisel.if I fit it this way the mark is pointing at roughly 10 oclock

The only reason that I can think of for setting the flywheel in a particular position is if the engine has been balanced.
The Haynes manual shows a 1/4 mark on the flywheel of the 1275 engine below the ring gear.

I can't think of a reason it needs to be one way on. I'm sure it will be OK. As Mike says it would only apply on a balanced engine.

there is a definate mark on the flywheels, well on the 2 that i have and also on 1 when i rebuilt an engine

1/4 is round outer rim, it is difficult to find but it is there

Found it,its right on the rim that steps down from the teeth on the flywheel,(If that makes sense)

Engine is now back together cant wait to fit it back in the car and get it fired up.(Hope it doesnt Blow up!)

Make sure the flywheel flange was spotlessly clean - and use Loctite on the bolts - and torque them up correctly, before locking over the tabs. Is there a GOOD Oilite bush in the tail of the crank ? For all they cost - I would fit a new one.
