Engine Number

Post by MColes »

I usually have no problem finding out what engines are from what cars using a pdf file I have but my own car is now puzzling me.

The engine number on the logbook that came today and the engine on the actual engine in the car are different - ok the engine at some point must have been changed, no big deal.

The logbook says the engine number is 8AMUH242863 - from what I found out this is an engine from a mini 850, is that correct?

The number on the actual engine in the car has the number RKM1104E6803 - I can't find any info to help tell me what this engine is from, anyone any ideas? :-?

Just found out by searching the threads on here that RKM denotes a UNIPART silver seal replacement - the hint was the engine is silver, but every part of the engine is silver even the oil cap, I think someone went made with a can of spray paint

But can anyone tell from the engine number what size it is?

From the picture on your other post it looks like it still has the 803 manifold and carb on it. This obviously doesn't mean anything as it could have been swapped over if it did have an 803 in it at some point in time. (I doubt a Mini 850 would have been fitted as it's way to much work). Look at the fuel pump blanking on the block. If it's a bolted on plate it is 948, 803 or 1275. 948 engine has "950" cast into the block behind the exhust downpipe. 948 has a thinner backplate than the 1098. Oil filter position varies between engines etc. Put some more pics on and we'll make a decision then mate ;-)

I also doubt it ever had a Mini 850 engine in it but according to the engine number on the logbook it did :-?

It's not a 948 as there isn't a "950" cast into the block. The car feels as if it has more go in than my old car so I think it's bigger than a 948.

I'll try and take some pics now ;)

Share the knowledge - how can you tell?

What about the carb? Is that the right one for the engine?

Carb is correct - Manifold is wrong.
Clues to engine are tappet chest covers and fuel pump blanked hole. As it has removeable TC covers and a cast over pump hole it has to be a 1098. If TC covers were not removeable and it had a plate over the pump hole it would be a 1275 from a Midget cause the oil filter is still at the bottom of the sump.....

My guess was 1098. Perhaps the 1104 in the engine no denotes a small overbore?

What would be the advantage of fitting a different manifold? Is that the correct air filter? Thought I've seen them a different shape on 1098 engines?

Would you inform the DVLA their records are wrong? (engine size on logbook is correct engine number is wrong)

Its definatly worth sending an update of engine number - just post it on update section of the V5.

Different manifold means better airflow and therefore better power

Another question then - how can you tell it's the wrong mainfold? What are the differences?

The shape of the inlet is different.

The air filter is correct for a 1098.

If you tell the DVLA of a change of engine they "may" come back at you wanting details of who fitted it and when ect which can be a pain in the bum if you don't know ;-)

I'll put an add in the wanted section for a 1098 manifold.
The air filter is correct for a 1098.
What engine had the sort of filter that is upright and the air intake points forward? If you can understand what I'm on about - will try and find a picture of one.
