1.6 or 1.7 Zetec

I have just been doing a bit of thinking. Please correct me if im wrong!

I know that the 2.0l can be fitted with a bit of fettling but i thought that the 1.6 or 1.7 zetec would be an easier engine to fit as i assume it is shorter?

I have a pickup which currently has no wiring! I was thinking that it would be easier to go straight into an engine conversion rather than wiring the 1098 then fitting a zetec and changing all the wiring?

My concerns are that do you have to cut the bulkhead? as this is where my feet would be

What wiring would i need to set it up? as i said it would all be new.

How much do you think this would cost me? i read on wiki that you can buy a zetec (sigma) from ford

I would be surprised if the "smaller" engine was shorter.. I would have thought it would either have smaller bores or shorter stoke giving a "smaller" engine capacity..

We only deal with the Ford 'Blacktop' Zetec engines. I believe that the smaller capacities are completely different motors to the 2.0L Zetec.I'm not sure if these will fit (the starter is the real bugbear in the Zetec conversion).
I know that the new 1.6 Zetec is used by Morgan so is evidently capable of being rwd.

Well if I fitted the 2l would it fit ok in a pick up?
If I bought it as a crate motor how much more do you think it would cost for the rest of the bits? To get it up to running?
Seeing as the crate would cost around £700 ish.

A std spec 2.0L motor converted to RWD inc special loom ,mapped ECU etc excluding the starter motor and bell housing/box would be in the region of £3800 inc vat.
Retro Ford do alternative parts such as sump and water rail.

i stand corrected and learnt something but why if the engine is totally different is it called the same.. just ford marketing I suppose..

No idea why Ford gave a blanket name for the range of engines. Retro Cars mag did a very good article on the Zetec and derivatives, I'll try and find it and post up their list.

Thanks for the info Jonathan. I don't have that sort of money really is there any engine that is relatively cheap to fit? Around £1000 ish.
What about the xflow? I read in practical performance car that one of the staff writers is putting in a crossflow!
Or maybe a 4age could be fairly cheap?

the 4age will not be that cheap..

the toyota t50 / t60 boxes ( i think that is what they are called ) will fit on to the 4age engine no problems but they are not easily found and therefore not cheap.

all is not lost the ford type 9 can be mated to it this or was a common kit car fitment trouble is you need a new bell housing etc and they are not cheap either.

Sorry to go back on old posts but I'm new here and only just seen this - but I know quite a bit about Ford engines....

The 1.6/1,7 Zetec is completely different to the Zetec E - both black top and silver top.

It's code name is Sigma and it's an all-alloy engine with a lot in common with the current Duratec - it's extremely light and very similar in configuration to a Toyota 4A-GE - in fact it's reported to be a copy...

The head has input from Yamaha - some say it's a Yamaha engine but it isn't.

The most famous version of the engine was found in the Racing Puma at 1.7-litres and 150-ish BHP (?)

They can be turned round to RWD but they don't have a Ford-pattern bellhousing - like the Duratec. Conversion bellhousings are available from specialists BPJ - Google 'em!.

They were called Zetecs because Ford called all their engines Zetecs at one point - then switched to Duratec - confusingly calling the ST170 a Duratec causing loads of confusion when it isn't - it's a Zetec - it just looks like a Duratec...

need to know more, ask - I won't know either!!
