Where to put radio speakers?

Post by ghostmadlittlemiss »

I'm not sure which forum this should be in since it's not a problem, just advice I need. I'm thinking of having a radio fitted in Molly (1967 Morris 1000). I know I'm having the radio in the glovebox and the aerial on the driver's side wing but I'm not sure where it would be best to put the speakers. I was going to put them on the parcel shelf but I've been advised that because of the vibrations, the sound quality would be poor. Where would you recommend I have them?

Front footwells (attached to side panels) is a good place. You can get 6x9's in and they are well placed for you to hear sound coming from the radio.....

If you build yourself a new pair of footwell panels out of hardboard at either end of the parcel shelf when you remove the old panels which are too flimsy to fit speakers, you will see that there is a hollow in the body which is large enough to fit a pair of 5 in speakers.
I would not advise fitting the aerial in the wing as it forms a very good rust trap. If the interior light is near the rear view mirror then you can remove the light whilst you drill a hole for the aerial and replace the light afterwards. Alternatively there are aerials that stick to the rear windscreen.
You should be able to buy a cradle to bolt the radio under the glove box.

Hi Kayleigh,
Ours are in the footwells, hardly notice them and if you get good speakers there's no vibration.
