Big Vibrations and unleaded conversion

On the first run of the day our Morris sometimes makes a big heavy juddering vibration which comes from under the car. I suspect I'm not using enough choke but wondered if a gearbox tension wire as sold by ESM would help reduce this?

Also we have only had Doris since August and do not think she is converted to unleaded. How could we tell and if she is not, how much might this cost (or alternatives!?)

Can't help with the juddering, but somone will be along to sort that in a minute!

You'll be fine running on unleaded if you're not doing a huge mileage and driving hard. There are plenty of additives if you feel better using one, (there's a recommendation in a post somewhere on the forum). An unleaded head conversion can be carried out, but will be around £200/250 if you do it yourself, more if a garage does it.

You only need to pull the choke out about 1 cm for a cold start and you should then push it most of the way back in immediately to a fast tickover, and probably all the way back after a couple of hundred yards.

Your car should have a gearbox steady cable fitted, is it missing or loose?

Re: unleaded don't worry, keep an eye on the valve clearances, you can always buy the unleaded head at some point in the future if your present head is shot. You can't really tell if your present head is unleaded unless you remove it.

Yes, for a cold start this time of year / weather etc I'd expect full choke to start the engine then in about half way immediately. Aim to get choke fully off after running for about a mile. This is assuming all is set up correctly of course....

Well that's what works on mine, the plugs are a good colour and I'm getting 42.5 mpg on average...(3.7 diff)

That sounds OK - My 948 Trav does 45mpg ave with a 4.22 diff in....

My 1098 was doing a steady 38mpg before the diff swap, can't seem to get any higher than 44 at best now but still trying

Don't expect much from that wire - and don't do it up tight anyway! It's there to restrain the engine in a sharp stop - and keep the fan out of the radiator. Juddering is usually oil on the clutch linings - but could be horribly 'soft/oil contaminated' engine mounts. Check the engine steady is ok - not sheared away from the bulkhead!
