http://forums.mg-rover.org/showthread.php?t=332515

some are saying it's to attract chinese, as they like the English language, and some are saying that there might be speculations to use the name Morris again on commercial vehicles since SAIC now also bought LDV whatever it is, I found it quite nice to see the name Morris again :)

Not Quite,

MGR is owned by SAIC who have a large stake in TATA who own JLR.

JLR can therefore be viewed as sister company but Rover is certainly not owned by them

Me and MColes had a bit of investigation about this via facebook a few months back

Sorry Dan, the Rover name is owned by JLR. BMW leased it to MGRover who then sold it to Ford, who then let it go to JLR to protect the Land Rover brand. Remember Land Rover is essentially a Rover by name. Anyone using the name is breaking copy right and will get done. This is the reason why SIAC use Roewe instead. If TATA want to use the name, they would have to approach JLR, SAIC as a shareholder couldn't just take it.

Aaah, yes I see your point. I was referring to the company itself rather than the actual name.

But as TATA own JLR they therefore own the Rover name surely? but doubt they would ever use it.

Taken from wiki

BMW sold the Rover marque to Ford in 2006 for approximately £6 million, heralding an option of first refusal to buy it as a result of its purchase of Land Rover. Ford thus reunited the original Rover Company marques, primarily for brand-protective reasons, in preparation for divesting its Premier Automotive Group subsidiary.[2]

In March 2008, Ford reached agreement with Tata Motors of India to include the Rover marque as part of the sale of their Jaguar Land Rover operations to them, alongside related Daimler and Lanchester marques.[3]

With no Rover cars currently in production, the marque is considered dormant.

I say never say never. I dare say that the way things are at the moment the Rover name would clash too much with the Jaguar brand. But, you just don't know what ambitions TATA have. Perhaps one day they may feel a Rover badged TATA would be more acceptable over here than a TATA.

But yes you are right, as a company and it's assets, everything is SIAC, by name it's with JLR. Something to tell your kids hey! :D

We seem to be making the same point here but from different angles and then winding up in the crossfire.....

It upsets me to think of all the money leaving these shores for foreign vehicles - Rover/Morris name or whatever
