Rev counter

Hi, I've searched high and low for info on this but only found threads with details of how to fit a specific rev counter and that it is uneccesary to fit a rev counter to a standard engine.

I however am going to be in need of one as when I have fitted my large sound system I am going to find it difficult to hear the revs of the engine when it is on. Whilst 'the car talks to you' through the pedal and acceleration, I'd like to have a visual indicator to make sure I don't end up driving everywhere in second!

I understand that there are a few different types of tachometer: electrical, mechanical... and that I'll need one for a 4 cylinder engine. Could anyone tell me what type (elec/mech/...) I should go for in terms of suitability in fitting to a mildly tuned 1098? I can then get on ebay and make sure I get the right sort.

basically a 4 cyl electrical one with the correct earth

How about one from a later Spridget? You'll have to make your own way of mounting it, but it should be appropriate for your engine and a simple hook-up.

spridget one is a little odd... I cant remember the wiring but its not intuitive. There is something to do with looping a piece of wire around something at the back

If your sound system is turned up so load that you can't hear a Morris Minor engine revving its nuts off then you risk damaging your ears and the general public's tempers.

Thanks for pointing that out Matt. I've found a neg earth one from a Ford Corsair, would that suit do you think?

haha, indeed Mike. I'm most considerate with sound when other people are around, slightly less considerate to my ears but ever since I've had a car I have wanted BIG sound, so its a must!

Never understood the fascination with 'counting revs'!
Or 'sound systems' in cars either! I like to hear the whine and grind of the A series - as it beats itself to death!

personally i would try and find a 2" or 52mm rev counter i find something like the corsair or mg a little to big and hard to fit somewere in the car or get a TIM rev counter thats already in a pod a lot better to fit and easy to wire up

There are loads on fleabay at the moment all around the 2" some with chrome surround some without. Try Smiths Rev Counter.

haha, I too like to hear the sound of the engine, but on long drives I like to have some music... and listening to a lot of dub and reggae bass is very important, hence the need for a decent sound system

A 52mm guage would be ideal, both for ease of fitting and to match the oil/water gauge, but I'm keen to get one with similar number styling to the Minor speedo - the corsair one is very similar. Will have another look under 'Smiths rev counter' and see whats about.

I have just removed a spridget rev counter from lilly as every time i turned the lights on the revs died! yes the car was wired that badly!

George,

What polarity is your car? Most OEM rev counters are -ve earth.

i have put a spridget rev counter in my morris and have the same problem, every time i indicate the rev counter drops to zero. ive also found that if i rev above 3500rpm the rev counter goes wild and oscillates from 2000 to 5000 rpm.would this be an indication that the coil is damaged in some way?? or just bad wiring/rev counter.

spridgets have a voltage stabiliser for the instruments IIRC. Does the Morris?

Don't really miss not having one myself, but in the SAAB where it's really quiet, it's quite useful. You sort of get to know, though after a while, how quick you can go in which gear.

In my midget, the rev counter used to go crazy when the condensor was on the way out.

I find my ears go wild when I keep it above 3500rpm for prolonged periods.
