Hi there,
I'm in the process of accumulating parts to tune my 1098 along the following lines: 940 head, HIF38 carb, LCB and freeflow exhaust. I have come across a cheap HIF 44 carb - does anyone know if this would be ok in place of the HIF 38, are there any advantages/disadvantages to using an HIF44 instead?
I have an alloy inlet from a Metro which I believe accepts both the 44 and 38.
Any thoughts appreciated.
Cheers,
George

I think a 44 is too big for a 1098 so I would go for a 38. Even though either will fit the MG manifold to size of inlet is matched for a 44 carb so you may have problems if using a 38 carb on the MG inlet. There are the correct manifolds for 38's available so I would find one of those too. All that said, there is no reason why you can't run a 44 on the 1098 - It will work, its just that I don't think it is optimum for that engine.

It will work ok - and a useful thing to have when you finally upgrade to a 1275 engine. BUY IT! Either carb works fine on the MG manifold - small carb on big hole is fine - no problem there, if using the 44 - Vizard details how to improve matters by enlarging the inlet hole in the manifold to the MAX - and then working on the black plastic spacer to get a better flow from the carb into the manifold.
