Is my Minor a 1098 in disguise

Following on from a previous topic I am replacing the crank,bearings and thrust washers,all for a 948(it says 948 on tax book)
washers arrived seperate and were different to the ones already fitted to the engine,so I emailed BM a pic of my washers and they said mine look like 1098 ones.

They said to tell if its a 1098 to look on cylinder head near the thermostat and there should be a switch or bolt (I think, fogot to write down what he said)maybe someone can put me right on this.

1 other "tell tale sign" might be the presence of a small metal plate on the block stamped 1100.Which I only saw 15mins ago

I spoke to previous owner and he has no recolection of the engine being changed.

Im gonna add a few pics hopefully someone will be able to tell me if Gladys is really a 1098 rather than a 948.
If so this means all work to date has been a waste of time

Yes - that's a 1098! The BIG clue - being the '1100' plate on the side. The engine number will also start with '10' .
I wasn't aware of a thrust washer change between these engines - but it's many years since I saw the insides of a 948 engine!
Does this mean - you now have a 948 crank - in a 1098 engine ?? Sadly - it won't work.

1100 on the side plate means a 1098
has it got an engine number on a plate on the left hand side( looking fom the front of the car ) top of the front of the block

Yes I have a 948 crank and bearings fitted in a 1098 engine.

Engine no on the block,Ive just looked this minute

10MA-U-H 270762.

Worst thing is I coulda bought a 1098 rebuilt engine (not converted tho )for Between £200/£250

Would have been a straight swap then.

It's a much better engine - for power. Not as smooth - but better performance. Just need to encourage Bully to take back the crank and send you a 1098 instead!
Next check - look at the gearbox casing - is it 'smooth' (948) or 'ribbed' (1098) ?

Ribs = 1098. Now - you need to wonder what ratio is in the axle!

Tedious counting of turns of prop shaft - against turns of road wheel is one way. Or - take the diff out and look at the markings. I wouldn't worry about it too much - it's not that important at this stage.

I take it if its a ratio to suit a 948 and the 1098 is there the read out on the speedo will be inaccurate

The 948 would have a 4.55 ratio - and 1504 tpm speedo, a 1098 should have 4.22 ratio and 1408 speedo.
