Paint preperation

Post by maverick »

I am doing some body repairs and was just wondering what to coat the panels in after i have taken them to bare metal and filled them?

I may take me a while to do all the panels and will not be getting it painted for a few months! dont know if this makes a difference?

Thanks

Yes it can. If you spray primer - either etch or normal it will absorb moisture from the atmosphere, which will not provide a good key to the final paint. If you can only do it slowly, I suggest you work on a panel at a time getting each into top coat before beginning on the next.

At least put a thin coat of black paint - spray cans will do - over the primer. This will be handy when you come to do final down flatting anyway since it will show up the defects.

Ideally you need a rust proofing coat of zinc rich primer. As Lou suggests etch and primer are porous. What ever you use simply D/A it all off again when you come to final paint just to avoid the dreaded micro blistering (trapped moisture in/under the paint)

With a tarry brush ? I think it's more for structures - rather than cars!

D/A is a dual action sander, used in bodyshops to cut back paintwork, with discs of between 40- 400 grit
Go for zinc rich primer in spray cans.
Where is the car going to be kept, if its in a garage with some form of constant heat then just primer the bare steel as you will will/should be removing this when the respray is due.
