Nothings terminal with a welder and grim determination.....
I think theres a bit of scaremongering going on here. Unless Tim is pretty damned rusty then the chassis rails are unlikley to have snapped. I'd be inclinded to have a look but unless theres a glaring problem (i.e torn metal) then I'd be looking at the engine mounts.
Not good Here's the chassis leg on the drivers side. You can see how close the oil filter is to the chassis as well.

Also there is a patch on the chassis leg on the passenger side. So whether there was as crack on that side as well and someone has just patched over it I don't know

Yup - that looks like it needs some serious attention, more likely to be a new leg than 'cut out the bad and weld in some new' as there doesn't look to be much sound metal in the locality - and as for the other side, I haven't pulled off a patch yet that hadn't made the problem it was 'curing' worse. Sorry.....
Don't give up hope- someone in your neck of the woods must be a sympathetic Moggy welder! Not much to pulling the engine out and climbing in there! ( I'm trying to make up for the "scaremongering"!)
A rusty mass always looks a lot worse than clean, cut back metal!
I wouldnt worry about the oil filter being near the chasis leg, you car should have an 803cc engine fitted which had the filter further up the block. You have a later engine fitted, the later cars had a 'bent up' flange to clear the oil filter.
