I've been advised that I should put down a layer of carpet on the floor of the garage to stop condensation forming on the underside of the car. Does anybody or everybody else do this?

The upside is that you can mop water (and oil) off the vinyl.
In my garage I have the vinyl at the front "working area" and the car goes over a mostly carpeted area.
If it has to be put away wet I'll normally leather off most of the outside.
The garage is under a block of flats and normally seems a little warmer than the outside when it's cold.
Not sure if this is a good thing or not.

I used to have sheets of plywood in mine! an 8x4 sheet covers a lot of floor!! Also it will dry out if you have to put the car away wet (as would vinyl) I think carpet would soon rot away and hold all sorts of nastys. If youre feeling flush I can recommend some "cushioned floor tiles" (search on ebay!) Tiles are 2'x2' they come in packs of 8 and I just bought a pack now and then (when they where on special!!) and have now covered my floor with them and "boy" what a difference
) can even jack up a car off them and a few hours later the marks have gone!
