dont worry about being new to this, there are a few of us out here who are also quite new, ive been driving my minor since jan and im still finding out new things all the time, i dont profess to know every bolt. i wouldnt have known TRE either ;-) but now i do. My car being older than i am is teaching me that good engineering is not just about knowing how things work, but also know how to apply the knowledge. i.e. having a feel for what is actually happening to the car when driving it. having never driven a rear wheel drive car b4 this was the first thing i had to lern over again, how to drive. Now that made me feel a bit of a novice... Oh and ive been caught out by the brakes, not beeing as punchy as modern day cars too ;-)

If the grease nipples on the TRE's are being phased out, looks like I'm going to have trouble getting the CCW that sits below the nipple!! It's missing on one of mine.
I think the idea is to cover the small 'vent hole' on the top, but still allow surplus grease to escape; as the washer is 'crushed' by the nipple it grips the TRE!! tightly, but under pressure grease will pass.
Well that's my theory! So anyone with an old TRE fitted with this washer---please forward the washer!!

The grease nipple has a ball and spring arrangement that the grease is pushed through by the gun.
Normally the grease "pumps up" the rubber boot then comes out around the pin if you keep pushing grease in.
A picture might speak a thousand words in this case.
Looking from the top the vent hole is next to where the nipple screws in. Nothing to do with the actual nipple, the washer in question is of sufficient diameter to cover this hole, and is fitted under the nipple.
I'm looking at the factory produced service parts list, page J2 and facing plate. It shows clearly the component parts of the TRE, including the grease nipple. There is NO washer under the nipple. Moreover, I would argue that the thread on the nipple is not long enough to allow the fitting of a washer. I suspect that whatever this strange CCW thing is, it's a home-made modification.
Well both sides had them fitted, unfortunately one split, this is on a van, but my pick-up has them also. Without them the grease takes the easiest route out; ie via the small vent hole rather than filling the boot.
Well I steamed the stamp and having it attached to the tre for POSTING on here. I think I am getting this steamboating thing confused with surrealism. I think it's a phase some pass through!
