No rear lights

Post by regtubby »

A kindly passing cyclist pointed out that we have no brake lights. On further inspection it turns out that we don't have rear lights, numberplate light and front sidelights. However we do have indicators all round and headlights.

Is there likely to be a common cause? All fuses are OK.

All of those circuits are fed off the same fuse so if the fuse is OK check that the connections on the fuse box are clean and tight and also the fuse contacts (the brass bits).

I'm not an expert on electrics but problems I have had with lights in the pass have included earthing issues (earth connections from lights coming away) and a faulty brake light switch. Hope that may be of some help

This thread might help - a similar problem was caused by incorrect wiring to the switch: http://www.morrisminoroc.co.uk/index.ph ... ear+lights

I did suspect that there might be a common link but needed reassurance.

I'll get my multimeter out later.

Thanks

All the side lights have their own fuse. It's one of those in-line holders on a red wire. Should be lying horizontally next to the wiring harness against the bullkhead near the voltage regulator. This would account for all side lights, but not the brake lights which come from a fuse in the fuse box. Check all bulbs (meter or direct wire from battery). Try shorting out the brake light switch (front right hand side of car near the radiator, below fresh air intake (depending on year!). If the brake lights now work then switch is faulty, if not then check wiring. Just follow the diagram and check for 12volts at various points.

Not all cars have this fuse, my '58 doesn't.

I have two fuses, one for things that are always on and one for things that come on when you turn the ignition key.

Good work folks.

I had replaced all fuses as they all looked like they'd seen better days apart from the inline one which was ok. It turned out that I just needed a bit of emery paper on the inline connectors.

Brake lights now working too after giving the +ve lead some attention.

Thanks
