Cover Panel
If the dreaded "cover panel" is in place then I should go and find another car.
This advice is found on the "Buying a Morris" section. Could you please tell me a bit more about the cover panel and its purpose please?

I PRESUME they mean the sill covers. Take a look at this thread here, give you some idea what you should look for and should avoid.

Problem is most sellers don't like you taking their car to pieces to look. It's usually a risk you have to take.

Strange one this - Sarah has cover panels in place on all but one 'quarter' of her sills. However when I took the kick plates off to have a look, all was well underneath. Either somebody fitted them as an extra layer of protection or there's something funny going on such as another sill being welded on top of the original.

Thanks for the info, and thankyou to aupickup for the offer of help but I only just checked the messageboard tonight. Hope you enjoyed the trip up here. I did go and have a look at a two door minor last night and this was the first time I have ever had the chance to have a good look round one. I got the chance to start it up and and was surprised at how loud it was,lol. The cover panels were indeed in place. Unfortunatly the car had a very bad paint job. The car was in very original condition as far as I could tell and had its original drum brakes which I believe was the cause of an mot failure. There was also a bit of a thudding noise from the engine but it had been in a garage for one year without moving. There was also a couple of rust holes in the engine bay and around the small passenger window. The floor panels seemed good and there was no play when I tried to move the wheels to check the trunnions. The interior was pretty bad. In the end I saw it as too big a job to take on. I know nothing about cars in general so really needed it to be road worthy so I could get it to and from the garage without needing a tow truck. The interior could have been sorted over time. I could sort the brakes and see to an engine rebuild but I know the car needs a respray so it probably needs to be totally stripped from the start and thats too much for me to do.
But it was really worthwhile going from the experience gained.

interior refurbs are quite expensive
but if the car is solid then with the bad interior you have a bit of bargaining power
if the car is solid dont worry about the paint job
remeber very shiny cars are not necessarilly structurally sound
the offer still stands for this weekend, leaving tom until early sun morn

I knew a chap who advertised for MOT failures, resprayed them, bodged what was needed for the MOT then resold them with the catch line "shiny new paintwork".if the car is solid don't worry about the paint job

I remember there was a link on here a while back for the DVLA so that you could find out the original colour. At the moment the car is at a reasonable price but that could quickly change as it often does on Ebay.
I have recently joined the Cumbrian branch of MMOC, it only started in May, hoping to make contacts and get plenty of advice.

well looks like it could be a bargain
especially as he has said the structure seems good, and if thats all it failed on the mot should not take to long to fix
BUT if thats all it needs then why did he not put an mot on it
still looks quite good, i am up in that area the weekend so may even place a bid

Never, never, did I say NEVER buy a car from the owner (who wants rid of it for maximum money) description or pictures.
If you get lucky it might be OK, but there is every chance you will end up with less than a ton of scrap metal that will absorb time and money like a sponge and sap your enthusiasm too.
Meet the owner, and hear the story, then assess the car on it's own merits.
If you buy a car from Ebay on the strength of some mobile phone pictures and a good story then don't say you weren't warned.
Cynical? Mois?
