Clutch Adjustment (?)

Post by Benjy »

Trying to fit a clutch return spring today, I noticed the adjustment is right at the end of it's stop and there's already too much free play in the pedal.

Looking through the hole in the bellhousing on the opposite side to where the lever sticks out (should there be one?): the mechanism seems to wobble about on the input shaft a lot (both along it's axis and across it) and doesn't always sit square.

Having never replaced / taken a clutch apart, I'm not too sure what's likely to be wrong. Any suggestions?

The clutch does seem to disengage, but only right at the bottom of the pedals movement. My brothers clutch is the other end of the scale!

clutch

It seems that you have a lot of 'lost motion' in your clutch
operating mechanism. The release bearing is mounted on a
shaft with a bushed pivot, this sounds to be badly worn on
your car giving the 'wobble. The various shafts and pivot pins
can wear alarmingly and give you a large amount of lost motion.
The early cars had 3/4" clutch pedal clearance before operating,
the later cars at least 1 1/4" and ,in normal use the clearance
will DECREASE as the clutch plate wears. Check ALL of the pivot
points for wear, especially the phosphor bronze bush which is
mounted in rubber, inside a metal housing, bolted to the chassis
leg. It is common for this to have collapsed thus losing a great
deal of motion.
