Spot weld drill advice

Post by djkinght »

Can anyone advise me on the best size and type of spot weld drill?

I'm also discovering that spotting the spot welds is a bit hard in places, any advice on the best way to reveal them?

Hi

A light rub over with wet and dry reveals where the spotwelds are as when formed a slight ridge is created around the weld. No good if its very rusty but you can then usually feel the dip where the spot is as the joint is stretched by the rust between.

It's helpful to drill a 1/16'' pilot hole through the first layer of metal to keep the drill centred.

I removed all my spot welds with a 5/16 drill which I ground almost flat, this used the depression of the spot weld to keep it on course.
Used at a moderately slow speed it worked a treat!

Wurth do a spot weld drill bit thats a little pricey but lasts an age and is great at its job.

Thin scraper type tool is good to hunt spot welds, slide it inbetween the panels in question, gently tap along untill it hits the next spot weld.

Or if your not bothered about the panel to much, use an air chisel. job done.
