Fuel pump noise

Post by rvwp »

Hi, having just put my Moggie on the road after a full restoration, I am looking for advice on whether it is normal to hear the fuel pump clicking whilst driving. I'm told by a friend who had a Moggie back in the 70's that it is normal to hear the pump in the cab. Before starting, after the initial clicking when the carb is filling up, the pump is silent so I'm suposing that there is not a fuel leak post pump or the pump is not sucking air. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Rich

I can certainly hear mine when I'm driving slowly or at tickover - not really at speed though. It's not THAT loud but I can hear it.

Start worrying when you can't hear the fuel pump (not working) or it starts ticking furiously (run out of petrol)

It should indeed pump up when first switched on - then perhaps just the odd 'click' until you start the engine. Reckon on 5p per click !

It's normal to hear the pump. I can hear mine quite clearly when driving along. As Mike says, it's when you can't hear it you start to worry!
