Wiring an MM--- Its That Man Again

Post by Psiteep »

I'vve got the smaphore indicators workig okay. Doing so led to a further discovery.
It would seem that the previous owner had started on a rewind throughout. So there are lots of loose ends and I have no idea what goes were. The headlamps seem to work okay. Rear light and brake lights are just not there at all. But as said there ends of wires showing such as the one in the boot, that is dangling down and I think passes through to rear seat and appears again under it where the rear seat is taken out.
What I would like to know is what are the wires from the fuse box under the bonnet to which I should attach my new wiring? My manual isn't very helpful, as Jemima is in fact, a late 1952 or an early 53 model MM. All my manuals seem to be for cars later than that, 1955 seems to be the start point. Would the wiring diagrams work with my MM. I am sure that some of you will know the answer.

Yes - the wiring will be very similar - and if it's only rear lights and brake light - not difficult! Is the fuel gauge connected ?

Get yourself a proper workshop manual which will have the correct wiring diagram for the late Series MM.
If the previous owner followed the correct wiring colour codes then there will be very little difference between the Series MM and Series II and you should be able to identify most of the wires by their lengths and the positions of the ends.
If the wiring is not correctly colour coded or the original wiring is several shades of black then you should consider a new wiring loom which can be standard or custom made to suit your requirements

To Minor Maniac,
That is al right then, the wiring diagram I have will do.

There are traces of colour on the wiring but it has faded over the years. I would rather not touch the loom if I can avoid it. I accept I may have to get a new if al else fails. Where would I buy one? Look in Mirnor Matters to see if someone is advertising them? Maybe I should try Minor Developments as they supplied me with a 'new' semaphor arm.

Thank a lot

If someone has bodged up a new wiring system I would be considering a new loom made to spec. Not expensive and everything will be where it's meant to be

Dear All,
Thanks once again. bmcecoss, The two manuals I have are as follows.
1 Haynes Restoration Man for Morrios Minor and 1000
2 Owner's Workshop Manual Minor 948cc to 1068.
I've looked through both but cannot find N23. There are good circuit diagrams so I ought to manage. I am curtioius though what do you mean by N23?. is it something I should know.?

Sorry to sound like an idiot.

You need the BMC Workshop Manual for the Series MM, Series II and 1000.
The wiring diagram on page N.23 is for lowlight cars with the combined control and fuse box and single stop/tail lamp. You want the diagram on page. N.28 for late Series MMs with separate control and fuse boxes and mainbeam warning light.
