How Far Can I Go........?

Post by kittyflash »

I was hoping someone might have a rough idea of how far a Morris Minor will travel on a full tank.

Not surprisingly my fuel gauge doesn't work! (It's No. 2 on the list)

Neither does mine.
It depends on the size of the tank, 5 or 61/2 galls. Work on a basis of 30mpg to be on the safe side.
Find yourself a length of stick so that you can dip the tank to make sure that you have enough petrol to get to the filling station and also a gallon in a spare can specifically designed to carry petrol.
Note. It is extremely dangerous and illegal to carry petrol in anything other than the correct container as it dissolves many plastics.

On a good long run, I get 240-250 miles on a full tank (6.5 galls). Think my record is 261, but that was driving specifically to see how far I could go on a tank. On a mixture of short runs & around town use, 200-220-ish.

A good Minor on a decent run should be able to give you at least 40mpg if not more. I have achieved 45mpg. Short runs/around town will be more like 30-35mpg.

The original answer was given in order to achieve a safe mileage in varying motoring conditions without running out of petrol 200yards from the filling station.
We all know that a Morris Minor can do 60mpg downhill with the wind behind it.

I made it from Uttoxeter to Rosemarket, Pembrokeshire (about 250 miles) on less than a tank of petrol.

I did think I had run out at one time, but it was only because I needed to apply some impact engineering on the petrol pump.

Carry a gallon of petrol in a suitable container until fixing the gauge becomes number one priority seems like a good plan.

Well I think I'll stop worrying now, thanks! I was filling up every 50 miles just in case.

And unfortunately it's moved to No. 3 priority now. My husband had to come rescue me as the battery was totally flat. Second time in a month. I hate battery problems.

With a 5 gallon tank, (and a 948 with big valve head and HS4 and bigger exhaust) we were getting nearly 190 miles on a tank.

MPG can vary loads! (easily +/-20%) so carry a fuel can (full)
If you remove the boot floor on one side you can fit (standing up) a 20L jerry can!

Sept 2010 - finally gave up breaking down in a SII Landy...
where to break down next?
2013... managed to seize my 1275 just by driving it round the block :(

Yes, but you try pouring a 20ltr jerry can into a Minor filler on a dark night when you have just realised that the filling station you were aiming for has closed :(

Ah - my tip is to use a head torch for light and the top 80% of a YOP bottle.

I'll stick to a 2 gall can = 60+ miles, that should be enough to get me to a petrol station. :)
That reminds me, I think I still have a 5 gallon jerry can of 4 star.
