We are about to convert a RHD to LHD. We have details of the new throttle pedal arrangement, but it would seem that the clutch and brake pedals will be the wrong way around, so really just wanted to see how a genuine LHD spec got around this problem. and then maybe if needed try and come up with a solution.
As I understand it, the brake pedal, with the master cyclinder, is assembled in the left-hand chassis leg, just as it is when on the right. The clutch pedal will be on the LEFT-hand side of the left chassis leg, as you look from in the car, and will need to have the pivoting pin lengthened so it will reach the clutch linkage, which will be on the left side of the gearbox. A simple mod, really.
Others will be along, I'm sure, to help you. I don't have any pictures as my Moggies are still right-hand drive.
Did think of the pedal being on the LHS of the leg but thought the torsion bar might be an obstical, will have a proper look in the next few days. Cheers for the info
I'll mention this while I'm here, though you'll probably find this info elsewhere when you are looking around.
The extended clutch pedal pivot pin needs to have a little triangular bit connected to it, which hooks up to the clutch linkage, which will itself sit between the gearbox and the right side of the left-hand chassis leg, in the same fashion as it would if on the right.
I can't remember where I saw this....probably in a catalogue somewhere. Again, it could be a simple thing to make (metal, grinder, file etc). But I think an original LHD clutch pedal must have a threaded hole at the end of the extended pivoting pin so the triangular bit could be bolted to it. I'm guessing a bit here.
I always think "cheapest", but I suppose if a customer is paying for all the parts and work, they would be happy to buy an original pedal with the triangular bit included.
Not much I can add to the discussion, most points are already mentioned.
The clutch pedal arm shaft has a shoulder on it to stand it away from the body so that it clears the torsion bar. The plate with the sealing foam on the other hand will rest on the torsion bar if given the chance. I believe the brake pedal is the same. The shaft extends through the frame and has a threaded end with two flats to accept the clutch linkage plate to duplicate the linkage attachment that is directly attached to the RHD clutch. The other novel thing about the clutch pedal as you can see in the books is the pedal itself is bolted on so that it can be removed to allow the arm to be inserted through the floor as opposed to the gearbox cover.
On the Minor SII, both pedals sit inside the chassis leg - to make LHD you need a different key position on the pedal shaft, but that's it.
The RHD throttle pedal can be used for LHD, but you would need additional mounting points on the floor / bulkhead. If you can get the LHD throttle pedal this will save effort.
If you use a Minor gearbox, you'll need to sort the clutch operation 'somehow'. LHD Minors use a different gearbox front plate to allow the lever to sit at the left.
LHD midgets use a RHD gearbox... because they have a hydraulic clutch slave ;-) They can run the pipe to either clutch master cylinder location. This is also an option for a Minor but means converting to hydraulic clutch.
