Trunnion Grease Seal

Had the front wheels off today for balancing (the passenger side was way out, no wonder the wheel was shaking

).

While the wheel was off I noticed that the rubber seal on the top trunnion, on the passenger side, has more or less rotted away and needs replacing. I was thinking while I'm doing the job I may as well replace ALL the seals on both sides.

So I was wondering if anyone will tell me.

1. What kit do I need to replace these seals?

2. Where is the best place to get it?

3. How difficult is this job to do and how do I do it?

Easy enough to do the job - complete strip down of the front suspension - but it's all straightforward. No idea where you will get 'new ' seals - can only suggest the usual suspects.

Well - that shows the track-rod end seals - and the trunnion seals (althoug BM spel it diferently!) - there are also little 'rubber band' seals on the ends of the lower trunnion pivot pins !

So, compiles shopping list for tomorrows auto jumble, in total I need:

2 x Track Rod End Rubber Dust Seal

4 x Rubber Dust Seal(For Top & Bottom Trunion)

4 x Rubber Sealing Ring(For Bottom Trunion)

and while I'm there...

4 x Tie Bar Rubber

Anything else I should add to my list do you think?

Track rod gaiters ok ?? And Poly bushes for the top trunnion/damper mount - if you don't have them already. Make a huge difference there!

Stupid question maybe (but I've kept up ok until now for a novice in my defence

) what are the gaitors?

Do you think it's worth buying the complete rubber bush set?

Just to warn you I bought the little rubber band seals from a well known company and they've lasted less than a year!

I think this could partially attributed to the wheels not being on (full rebuild outside in partial sun for 6 months)

But also the new type of rubber isn't great.

I'm not saying don't get them, just you may be replacing them sooner than you think

Gaitors - rubber squishy things on the ends of the steering rack - encompassing the track rod inner ball joints!

Well as I plan on taking it all apart I may as well Buy the gaitors as well and do them while I'm at it I suppose.

I'v also decided to order the full set of poly bushes rather than the rubber ones after reading in another thread that they make quite a difference

No, the poly bushes are the better bet, and do not cause a noticable increase in harshness, or noise.

there are different grades of poly bush - the stiff ones will increase the harshness.

I'm not aware of any rubber bushes that are fit for purpose on front suspension (e.g. eyebolt) as the one's I've had failed in less thn a year due to pathetically poor material.
Therefore unless the supplier is sure of their parts, enough to offer a guarantee that covers the cost of an additional front suspension rebuild, then poly bushes are probably a much safer option.

I fitted 'Superflex' poly bushes everywhere 11 years and 35,000 miles ago. At that time there was no lubricant supplied or recommended, so do get the odd squeak.

No visible signs of bush wear anywhere, including the eye-bolt ones, which I checked whilst the front suspension was off a few weeks ago. This time I did use some 'copperslip' when reassembling, so one source of squeak has been eliminated!
