Having spent a wistful 30 minutes by the side of the road yesterday for want of a petrol can (which was safely at home in my shed), I was wondering what essential tools you kept in the car on a day to day basis - and which particular ones had saved you.

I had a moment like that with the Spitfire on Friday – fuel gauges, tut….
I always carry:
A set of screw drivers
A small socket set, with sparkplug tool
A small set of combination spanners, 7/16, ½. 9/16, 5/8, 3/4
A bottle of water
A tank of fuel
If I’m going on a long journey I also bring:
A fuel pump
A distributer, complete with cap and leads
A coil
A set of sparkplugs
I have also started taking my 12V jump starter with built in compressor around with me as I currently have a fuel issue that requires me to clear the fuel line with a back flush every now and again.
Most important is my “box of stuff”, this is a box which has odds and ends in it that can get you home if needed. I have been known to fix a fuel float with a “from the garage” sandwich packet and some super glue, but in doing so lost the float chamber’s needle valve so used the top few mm of a bic biro refill. Not particularly recommended running procedure but it got me home. This box is something that grows, as more odds are thrown in, but can never be cleared out. It used to be the bottom of my toolbox but this became too cluttered so is know a box in its own right.
In 18 years of driving I’ve only every needed recovery twice, once was a lower wishbone failure and the other was a head gasket failure. All other time’s I’ve managed to MacGyver up a way home.
There has recently been a topic regarding what should be carried and I dare say someone will be along soon with a link to it…..
