Any one got any ideas where i get my paint code from , or can someone identify the paint on my 1967 moggy

Smoke Grey's paint code is BU15 this may help you find the ICI code.

I'm having a frustrating time with paint at the moment. I'm trying to match the grey on my Minor so i can get a litre of cellulose made up. I'm not convinced the paint colour is likely to be original, although to be honest it does look like the one in the first post. here it is;

To try and get a match I took the boot lid into a the closest autofactors I could find who still did CellUlose ( A thirty mile trip!). I left it with them and went back after they claimed to have found the closest match using the fancy scanner, A Citreon colour apparently. Trouble is I've just done a test and it's just miles out, I could have picked one of the Halfords shelf and got it closer... i've got another 60 mile trip now to take it back not impressed!

It looks very much like smoke grey. You can get small touch up pots from the main Minor traders for a few pounds. Why not buy one and see how close a match it is to your colour?

Try a bodyshop, they have their own mixing systems and might be prepared to mix you a small amount. Some classic restorers still stock cellulose tinters, but to be honest these are changing everyday, as stocks run out and new tinters need to be found. so getting an exact match might be a near impossibility.

I used these... they do most BMC colours in cellulose. Good quality, but a tad expensive if on a budget. Whn finding your colour, select "Rover Group" as the manufacturer.

The price per litre is about what I paid, but as I'm not convinced the car is a genuine colour I don't feel as though I would be getting anywhere by just buying on spec.
That site is smoke grey up to 64 only, not sure if it's acurate though.

Velocemitch, Mine is Clarendon Grey and the years of intro are wrong, but the colour match is very good. I didn't spray the roof, just the lower half of the car. The roof is original '53 Clarendon, I cut this back at the same time. You can only see the difference in direct sunlight, in the shade you wouldn't know. But, I can only speak from my experience though.

I'm sure the website says somewhere the paints are mixed by computer to the original formulae.

You may be able to see the difference here, picture taken in direct sunlight. But I hadn't cut the roof back at this point.

To be honest I think it's impossible to get an idea of the paint from photo's. I've just taken two photos of my boot lid, the one I've done the test patch on, and they look totaly differant depending on the angle.

It should be possible to see the miss match though, the boot lid's scrap by the way...

Yes, I agree it is difficult, also you have to allow for fading on the original colour too. I just bit the bullet and bought 4 litres, I may have been lucky, I also plan to do the roof sometime in the future anyway.

How about giving them a ring, see if they could send you a 30ml sample or something to put in your gun. As £30 per litre plus postage is too big a commitment to make without a visual? :)

Right I've been back to the company I got the paint from and got an unusual tale......

Aparantly the boot lid was scanned at one branch and the formula for the paint derived from the scan, this was given to the other branch to mix the paint. The problem is the formula was for 2 pack, not Cellulose. The other branch in their infinate wisdom made the paint up in Celly as I asked but using the formula for 2 pack, which ends up the wrong shade. :roll:

I've been told that the only way they can get a match is to use 2 pack, but make it up as if it was going into an aerosol which in effect makes it a 1 pack paint, thinnable with cellelose thinners. I'm assured it won't react with existing Celly and it is as safe (or dangerous whicih ever way you look at it) as Cellelose. It will be a couple for weeks now untill I can collect it as it's a bit of a trip, so I won't know how good it is.

you can get two pack in a can..

apparently it has a plunger which you "Push" through the base. Once done you have about 4 hours to use it before the stuff can no longer be used.

Obviously you need a special mask but that was not expensive
