Jacking points

Post by DuncanBeaumont »

I have just invested in a trolley jack and axle stands.

Where is the best/safest place to jack the front and rear of the car and where should I put the axle stands?

Use a piece of timber between the jack and the car, jack across the tie rod plate and along the side (or spread over both sides) of the chassis leg. Placement of axle stand depends on the work that you're doing, but a good place is under the eve bolt. Use a flat topped stand or timber again to spread the load. Do NOT jack on the front cross member or the centre of the chassis legs. Remember to chock the rear wheelsn as well as using the handbrake and leaving it in gear (again depending on what work you're doing!), and ensure that the ground and the car are level and firm.

Eye bolt! Where the front suspension attaches to the 'chassis' leg. And NEVER use the jacking points!

Depending on what kind of trolley jack you've got - you may find the wheels still on the ground whent the jack reaches full height!

Which is why a block of timber is suggested!
