Pickup / Van owners - which mirrors did you fit

Post by sgray »

I spoke to ESM today about door mirrors for my pickup, and they said the lucas style ones they sell probably wont see past the bed of the pickup.

Not sure why not but before I order the clip on ones (which I don't really like the look of), I wondered if any pick up owners out there had added mirrors.

regards
Simon

Well you probably won't like this option but when I had my van 10 yrs ago I fitted quite large commercial type mirrors intended for landrovers etc which involved drilling 2 holes in each door and a strong backing plate inside the door. I used the van for business use in London and it was the only way I could see much, otherwise pulling out or reversing was truly terrifying. Maybe the pickups are not so bad unless you have a canvas tilt on. The body does stick out an awful long way

I was lucky enough to inherit a pair of"stand offs" the my Brother in law had made for his Minor van.
They were perfect as I could use a wing mirror head (not flat) and get a good view.
The other thing I used to good effect was a Fresnel lens on the back window.
Amazing device, seems to let you see round corners almost.
Here is a picture, poor resolution I'm afraid but you can see the N/S stand off:
Image
Doesn't the literature show a mirror mounted to the windscreen frame? It had a rectangular mount plate with two screws and a long stem to the round mirror. Did these ever exist or is anyone offering them now?
I mounted the Lucas door style mirror to the triangular piece and through the bottom of the window/door frame but with a van there isn't enough extension.

I must admit I like the stems and mirrors approach. I've fitted some clip on circular ones to the quarterlights for now - but can easily remove them if I can find something more permanent. At least I can reverse in to the garage now. :D
