Little Traveller is on it's way home on a recovery vehicle Won't go into gear so don't know what's up yet. When it get's here I'll tell you more. Funny I was just saying to Simon that I thought the clutch was a bit odd i.e. had to release it nearly all the way up before it engaged gear properly - maybe it was just waiting to happen. Though perhaps that was just the way it was set up. Speak to you all again soon
ok - the AA man thinks it's the clutch. Goes into gear when the engine is off but not when running. Also when you release pedal it makes a strange noise. So how easy is it to replace a clutch!!!! Suppose it will be easier if up on some ramps at least to get a look at it. So if anyone is a expert on fitting clutches would be good to hear from you.
May as well ask if anyone knows what I'll be looking for - what clutch will fit the 1275 Midget Engine and the Siera 5 speed gearbox. Any help appreciated.
You have given that little bit extra information - about noise when pedal released. So - it's sadly not going to be linkage - either drop the box or pull the engine. I would pull the engine - but that's just because I like an easy life! Outside chance something has failed internally in the box. But hang on - has it maybe broken a half shaft ?? Does the speedo read when you select gear and rev up ?
Speedo reads nothing! Cable was broken and I recently extracted one part from the speedo end and the other from the gearbox end. Just having a new one made up by the company you suggested to me. Seems now to be the least of our problems. Sadly taking the engine out is just a bit much for me to do - I'll have to get a garage to check it out. Can't even drive it there!!!! You really need to move to Aldershot
Can test this tomorrow but I'm not sure how because I can't actually get it into gear when the engine is running. Can you explain further i.e. do you mean try to manually turn the prop when in gear without the engine running?
HI Mate, I think it is just the standard 1275 clutch kit you would need which most motor factors can supply. You might be best to take the box off and check it out properly just in case it is something to do with the box and not the clutch. Or could it be that the clutch needs adjustment?

Certainly worth a check - I'm thinking doom and gloom at the moment!! Funny you should say that - a while back someone did an adjustment because the clutch sounded as if it was touching something - a sort of squeaky noise! When done he couldn't get it into gear at all - don't know what else he did but he did fix it. I'll call him and try to find out what that was all about.
All fixed it was the pressure plate. Difficult to explain but in the centre hole there are three metal bits and one of these had sheared off!! The mechanic who fixed it said he'd never seen this happen before - ah well now going great.
Oh yes - i've had it happen before all right! Glad it's fixed! One thing I hope he checked - is that the gearbox input shaft needs to be properly supported at the flywheel end. In a standard installation - it fits into an oilite bush in the crank tail - in these 5 speed installations I 'think' it should fit into a specially made bushing in the flywheel centre ? If that is not present - or has come loose - then obviously the shaft can wobble about - which will strain the clutch plate - until it breaks!
