New Member? FAQS

Post by d_harris »

There have been a whole heap of new members crop up recently - which is a very good thing! If I've not had a chance to say Hi already, HI! :D

We here are a friendly bunch, and provided the t&cs are followed pretty much anything goes. This is also one of the few forums I've found where newbies aren't looked down on!

Before going further its always a good idea to fill in your location. It appears on the left hand side of every post you make. This means that if you are ever stuck with anything or have a "local" issue we know where you are and who to point you to! (to do this, hit the "Profile" link at the top of the page and fill out your details)

There seems to be a number of common questions coming up which hopefully we will be able to address here in an FAQ type fashion.

1. Where can I buy parts

- Post a wanted ad here, you never know what will turn up
East Sussex Minors (ESM) - http://www.morrisminorspares.co.uk/
- Bull Motif (Bully/BM etc etc) - http://www.bullmotif.com/
- Birmingham morris minor centre - http://www.morrisminor.co.uk/index.htm
- Tom Roy - http://www.tomroy.co.uk/

2. What if I want upgrades and modifications?

- JLH JLH Minor Restoration Ltd - http://www.jlhmorrisminors.co.uk/
- Minor Developments - No website, but details can be found at http://www.classiccarwebsite.com/home/a ... ts_Limited
- Most of the standard parts retailers also sell some upgrade kits.

3. How can I tell what type of minor I have?

There are a number of books on the subject, IMHO the best is "Original Morris Minor" by Ray Newell, out of print for a long time it has recently started in print again. If you need a quick reference you can't get much better than http://potteries.mmoc.org.uk/Identify.htm which was written by our very own CAM

4. I want to buy a car, what do I look for?

There are a number of buyers guides out there

two of the best (imho):
http://www.morrisminoroc.co.uk/index.php?page=310
http://www.theminorsite.co.uk/morris_mi ... uide_1.php

Of course, theres no substitute for experienced eyes, stick your location in your profile (use the profile link up top) and you might be able to persuade someone local to have a shufty with you!

5. What is the little sliding switch on the bottom of the dash (under the speedo)?

Turns the instrument (aka) speedo backlights on/off - regardless of the position of this switch the speedo will only illuminate when the sidelights are on.

-------------------------------------------------------------
I'm sure there is more, which I will add when someone asks or I think of. But I think this will do for now

You can also use the 'Main Menu' buttons to the left of this page to find lots of useful information such as:

Join - join the MMOC now and get reduced insurance via Footman James

Branches - find your nearest MMOC branch

Whats on - details of events and rallies

Links - details of traders, restorers, parts suppliers

Tech Tips - Common technical problems covered, also paint codes, security advice, buyers guide.

Please let us know where you are by using the 'profile' button at the top of this page to add your location.

If you need advice look at the message board index to find the heading that best fits your query eg mechanical, electrical etc and post a message. There is also a search facility at the top of this page to help you find previous postings on the same topic.

This is available from club regalia - click on the 'Regalia' button in the main menu to see the full range.

And as Dan has said, welcome to you all :D

Have just joined and looking forward to getting a copy of the Magazine in 2-3 weeks, but couldn't the username/password for the Members only area be emailed with the joining confirmation? I have dozens of questions and it would be good to see that part of the site straight away.

Welcome to the forum :D I believe that the members area is being updated and very few people access it at the moment. Post your dozens of queries up on the forum and you'll be guaranteed a quick response. Just have a look at the index to see which heading best suits your query eg mechanical, bodywork etc and post away!
