Traveller Rear Chassis Rail - repair

Just completed replacing the first side rear spring hanger unfortunately the rot has gone beyond the repair panel - above the bump stop buffer. I am using Haynes Restoration Manual as a guide (page 74) The bit I'm not too sure about is the new side wall of the box section is taken over the edge of the bump stop buffer, This would appear to leave a gap on the inside of the chassis rail which could allow water into the box section. (buffer welded on 3 sides only). This is exactly how it has been done by a previous owner on the other (untouched by my gas axe) side.
Could someone please advise

Hi

There is an outward bulge in the chassis rail at the bump stop location which is matched by a bulge in the inner wing and both are spotwelded together - therefore no gap. The bump stop bracket fits tight against this from the inside and the bump stop plate just clears the chassis flange.

Im fabricating a repair for this at the moment and will post some pics in the next few days.

taupe - just found your fantastic post on Traveller restoration. Mine's not quite that bad but then again I dont have your level of skill. Probably I can throw all the books away and just refer to your post when I need to do anything.
My biggest problem is that very little on mine looks like the original part having been repaired on top of repairs. The rear chassis legs had four different layers of steel right down to the original Old Engilsh White and the bump stop looks nothing like it was meant to.
