PUMP UP THE FUEL VOLUME
Hi. The fuel pump on Gladys, my 1962, 948 cc, has stuck a few times and needs replacing.
Before I go ahead and do this, I wonder if anyone has any advice/tips for replacing the pump, which I would be most grateful for.
Also, I would welcome anwers to the following.
A. Is it best to replace the pump with the newer hassle-free SU type or keep to the original type of pump with its' Achilles heel?
B. DSN sell an "Improvement Kit" for existing, orignal pumps, anyone had experience of this kit and if so, are they OK or a waste of time and money?
C. is it a job best left to a garage or can someone with a reasonable mechanical ability do it?

I've just replaced with an original SU from Bull Motif on our 1098. Think it was £45 plus vat & del.
They are the same as original & have contacts but they have a small capacitor in there to stop them arcing & getting stuck & are allegedly more reliable than the ones with a circuit to replace the contacts.
Have no experience of the DSN kit, be interested to hear what anyone else knows about it though!
The job is really easy, I managed it in the rain at twilight & it still only took around 10 mins... I also replaced the fuel pipe as a matter of course as I didn't know how old it was & they are only 6 quid.. Thought the length was a little on the "how short can we get this to save material" side but it fits ok....

Are the points a bit burned?? I would just fit new points, otherwise it would be like replacing the distributor everytime the contact breaker points were old....The fuel pump on Gladys, my 1962, 948 cc, has stuck a few times
Matt - I think you answer in 'A' was more suitable...B - If your pump is already broken it probably wont fix it!

The DSN kit is probably just the electrical contact module (loads of little circuity things) that SU fit to their "electronic pump". The electronic is the same as the standard pump, but they have an electrical circuit instead of the electromagnetic contacts.
If the diaphragm in the pump is U/S then the kit won't help... however if it's just the points, then it may be a fit-and-forget solution. There again, you could just clean the points with fine emery paper.

It's very likely to simply be the points and a few minutes with a nail file will probably cure it for no cost at all. Failing that a set of new points will cost a lot less. Replacing these points requires less mechanical ability than re-wiring a plug
Don't throw your money away on a new pump.
The fuel pump points sometimes stick on my scrap 4-door because it only gets started a few times a year. A tap with the starting handle always gets it going.

Hiya all, Many thanks for all the tips and help re Glady's fuel pump.
I checked out all the possible leads you kindly supplied.
The pump had been working intermittently and eventually I found it to be faulty, in its opwn right, so have replaced it, and problem soklved.
