When do you change up?

Post by MColes »

Just wondering how people drive their moggys compared to how I do (reportedly I'm like Miss daisy :roll: :lol:). So what sort of speeds do you change up a gear?

And to make it easier (am I being too demanding? :lol:) can you lay you answer out like below... pretty please :P

engine size = xxx

1st = xx mph
2nd = xx mph
3rd = xx mph
4th = xx mph

Depends on the traffic....

engine size = 1098

1st = 0-15 mph
2nd = 2-20 mph
3rd = 10 - 50 mph
4th = 20-?? mph

no idea..

just listen to your engine..

the speed wil depend on if you are going up hill / down hill / on the flat etc etc

amen to that, i change when the engine makes funny noises!

in the 1098 the torque curve is soo flat that i could just keep on going, it doesnt feel like it drops off but i give it a break at 5500rpm.

The datsun a15 beast, well i dunno because i havnt got a rev counter but if i keep going the way i am then ill have the middle east sucked dry in a matter of months :lol: it feels like it backs off a bit, then i change just as that comes on but i dont know when that is, id say its around 6500rpm. could just be a tuning issue but ill find out soon once my air/fuel gauge goes in.

okay I'll word it differently :lol: If you're on an open road/ motorway when do you change up?

Obviously I change up when it sounds like I need to. Just curious ;)

well im glad im not the only one whos not scared to take their engine above idle!

With the local morry club they probably wont let me back in now that i have datsun engine in my cars (SHOCK HORROR, END OF THE WORLD!!). They are a bunch of old farts sometimes. Their idea of a gymkhana was to tow a tyre on a rope and stop it in a square.

I realise a lot of people care dearly for their cars and so do i but they arent china mantle pieces.

On a sensibile note, when driving normally in the 1098cc powerhouse i tend to change up at about 3000rpm which is about:

2nd: 10mph
3rd: 20mph
4th: 35mph
5th: whoops wrong car

if you are thrashing it then

2nd: almost 20mph
3rd: 30mph
4th 50mph

its not good to thrash first gear though, it complains rather loudly

to give you some technical data, i put the gear ratios of a 1098 setup into gearcalc and got:

max in:
1st: 25mph
2nd: 41mph
3rd: 63mph
4th: 89mph

thats based on standard ratios and tyres of 175/65r14

Any idea what the technical data would be for a 948 setup?

have a look at that. its where i got the ratios from but after posting realised that it had the performance figures as well. I think they are the figures that the wheels magazine got on their road test

I remember my 89 F plate 1000cc Metro technical data was:

1st - 30 ish
2nd - 50
3rd - 60
4th - 89

I did hit those once but it was very noisey!!! Also I got 105mph tops whoopy!!
