Rattling dipstick

OK this is so simple but its driving me nuts.
My dipstick rattles in its tube! now I know theres supposed to be a rubber collar in there but mine went to old rubber heaven years ago, I've tried alsorts, o-rings bits of hose, even ground down rubber feet off coffee tables but nothing seems to be doing the job it either slides off the dip stick and stays in the tube or dosnt let the dip stick sit down good and snug.
Has anybody found something that will do the job?

The usual Minor parts suppliers sell dipstick rubber tubes. Perhaps a new one will solve the problem?

There should be a felt washer under the shroud on the dipstick which sits on top of the tube. Alternatively you could try putting a small bend in the dipstick so it presses against the side of the tube.

Or secure it with a bungy cord!

You could always try a bit of self amalgamating tape on the dipstick.

Currently running without the gearbox cover in place its suprising what smells and sounds come through.

How on earth do you hear the dipstick 'rattling' anyway!

I once had a 948 that really was that quiet at tickover!

Doesn't the dipstick have 2 sections together to hold it tight in the tube?
I'm sure the plastic tube wears away 1st but spreading the two sections should take up the slack and stop it rattling.
A little bit at a time until it fits without a rattle should do the trick.
Or try a new tube.
