front shocks

hello on driving on good roads shocks seem fine but a sharp little pot hole and things very much different loud bang as though suspencion bottoming out does this mean shocks u/s or just oil change..grandad

Are the dampers leaking any fluid ?. Has the car been lowered on the torsion bars.?What level of oil is in the dampers at the moment ?.
If all are okay then try a change of oil, or they may well be u/s.

If the new oil leaks out - then yes - they are u/s. Otherwise - I bet they will work just fine! Assuming you don't lose the valve assembly while draining the old oil!!!!!!!!!

What oil goes in them?
I seem to remember filling mine with SAE 140!

Well - I did use EP90 in my rally Minor. But I suggest SAE40 would be fine for a road car! That's NOT 10W40 BTW!!

Grandad have you checked the tie rod bushes are all ok or it could be worn eyebolt bushes.

Jack oil tends to be SAE10 - very thin - certainly NOT like SAE140 which is like treacle !
The 'standard' oil for the dampers is SAE20 - but SAE 30 is better, and SAE40 is much better!
