Hi all

Started day 3 on Sunday and continued on Monday with day 4.
In the two days I have managed to remove the engine and gearbox and all under bonnet bits,

Also managed to remove the rest of the roof and dash, heater and wiring harness and rear glass.

Leaving me with a empty shell sitting on its suspension and wheels only

I have been thinking about letting a professional do my body shell leaving more time on all the other bits (and you all know how many bits that is).

All I was hoping was to get them to do the welding and leave the rest to me.
After the welding was going to have it dipped in a bath of acid (recheck) then e coated then paint or is a crazy way of doing it?

So tell who can help? Is there any body on this site that does this for a living?
Tried to contact jlh Morris minors but have been unable to get them on the phone got this information from new members area, have only heard good things about this company.

Next was a company called Charles were Morris minors, spoke with them on the phone and have said no problem bring it down, but heard anything about them and they are a long way from me.

So please help me do I take it all the way to Bristol or is there someone else.

Anyway hers a picture I need some encouragement so send in messages of support.

Hi Shane, had the day off today if this is when you rang.
More than happy to have a look at you're convertible as we are only 20 miles or so away.
re dipping we would have an initial dip, have the car back for welding in repairs then send it back for a re dip and eventual E coating. The shell needs to be drilled in critical points to reduce the potential of air bubbles.
We have two convertibles in at the moment, pre dip and E coat and one fully welded and in E coat. Give me a ring tomorrow. :D

I wouldn't get a car dipped & e-coated. It's very fashionable at the moment, but one of my friends just had it done, and this is the result... You wouldn't want to discover this after paying 5k for a paint job.

The theory is the primer is trapping moisture in the seams.

Neither the acid dipping or E coat can reach these areas and SPL (if they did the job) should have made you're friend aware of this.
If this was a repaired area ie new flush steel then this would not have happened. This looks to have been corroded initially and should have been opened up and cleaned back before having it dipped.
it must be remembered that the acid/ecoat is a surface treatment and cannot penetrate layered panelwork. I doubt that the E coat is trapping moisture as its baked on. Maybe the primer applied by the bodyshop is though, but the rust in the pics is not new as you can see the thickness and flakeyness of the it and how its spread between the spot welds.
We have had 6 car dipped and E coated, none of which have shown any problems, and this goes back over 4 years.
I'd suggest bad prep or very rare bad luck.

The process is apparently supposed to neutralise the rust, and clearly hasn't here. Gav, the guy doing the prep has 2 cars from SPL in close secession like this. There has also been lots of other problems with it.

But the rust is coming from between the panels, the process cannot penetrate two flush panels and in the case above it might have started to clear the rust where it could. The major mistake that the bodyshop has made is to etch the Ecoated surface. SPL expressley told us not to etch as it could cause issues. Clearly this is what has happened.
If the bodyshop had noticed the softened E coat then they should have returned the chassis to SPL for a re dip and coating.
Excellent bodyshop work by them though.
