How much does a morris minor engine weigh, I ask this as i'm thinking of taking my engine and gearbox out during the winter for refurbing and tidying up the bulkhead etc. the other thing is i have a Hanson concrete garage and would the metal cross member that supports the roof be strong enough to take a block and tackle and lift the engine and gearbox out in one. your advice would be great.

From what I have seen of my bro's concrete garage I would say they are no where near strong enough. The bars are designed to take tension loads and so the section doesn't need to be that great.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.
Doesn't stop you lashing something sturdier to the crossbeam, as long as the walls don't bow out! I wouldn't have any qualms about using my mums garage in that manner! Engine weight, someone??
I would guess at about 4 cwt with the box. (Box by itself is a lightweight).
I'm surprised the 1098 box is that much heavier than a 948 box - I wonder why ? Sure that lighter weight is not maybe for an 803 box - with pudding stick ?
I wouldn't fancy a concrete beam - if you can put a steel pole across the garage that may be better - or just use a swing ?

Not my garage - just helping out!! The ratchet pull-lift device cost all of $6 Canadian ~ £3. Amazing bargain from Canadian Tire!
I would remove engine - and then gearbox , as two lifts.
when hanging things like block and tackle, the support not only has to be able to support the weight of item to be lifted (plus the block) but also the pull you exert when doing the lift.
thanks everyone for your input, the problems solved, I take my car to my cousins who has a large garage at the bottom of his garden with an ample hoist, so that's it , it saves me from struggling.
cheers mungo.
