Hello From a New Member & help please!!!

Post by borderblue »

We have just put a deposit on a 1969 Saloon which will be dropped of for us at the end of September. This will be our first restoration project and and no doubt we will be asking lots of questions!!
Question 1 How can we tell if our car is converted for lead free petrol or not? Unfortunately we do not have much history on the car from the last owner.
Hope someone can shed some light and a big hello to you all from the Scottish Borders.

Welcome aboard! Yet another Scottish member. PM sent!!
Don't worry about 'unleaded' - just run the car - on unleaded fuel - it will be fine. Unless doing high M/way mileage (unlikely in the 'Borders') - it won't need any special treatment.

To answer your question you would have to remove the cylinder head and remove the valves to see if inserts have been put in and if the car is running fine its not really worth the effort.
If you want to play safe with unleaded fuel you can use something like castrol valvemaster thats approved to protect the valve seats, however as Roy says if you are only doing local slower mileages it shouldnt be a problem.
Cheers
