*Day two* I think i have made a mistake i think

Post by skelly »

Hi all, well today was the second day and the front wings were a pain in the bottom, took me most of the day as I did not want to damage them as there is no rusty rot on them.
spent some time cleaning(hoovering the rust from the car) and what is left frightens me.
i had a gentelmen stop and talk and has told me the car is to badley gone for a rebirth and i should let it die  he also told me it is not a convertible just a roof chop saloon  please check out the pics and tell me i should do carry on or give it to the guy who said he would give me 200 pounds so i dont loose too much. please help
vin starts with M A T 5 D then 7 numbers M . he said that means it is a saloon.
v5 says that is a convertible, I have 550 pounds invested so far do i take his 200 pounds put down to lesson learnt and start looking again or do I carry on. My gut tells me to carry on

MAT5D is the correct chassis number for a 1098 Delux Convertible. The last M means it was a Cowley built car. It does not look too far gone at all in the pics you have posted. I think the guy who stopped to talk is trying to con you out of your car - Tell him where to shove his £200 !!!

V5 is right as the T 5 stands for a Series 5 Tourer and D denotes even a DeLuxe model - would like to be corrected if I am wrong here and am really curious what the M at the end means.

So based on other information I second mmjosh!

And concerning your other question: Do carry on and tell the passer by to stick his nose to his own business - I am not saying, that he knows what you really have and wants it cheaply...

Nobody who is honest is going to give you 200 notes for a car that is "too far gone".

From those pics there really is nothing fundamentally wrong with that car. I've currently got one in far worse condition sat in the garage.

It looks like that inner wing has been repaired in the past and its the repair thats rotted out (all too common problem) if you open the door, can you rock it up and down slightly?

I'd suggest getting the rotten bits of the sill replaced (weld some inch box section in the door gap first, to retain shape) and then deal with the inner wing

Hi

Dosent look too bad to me. And when you have sorted the body repairs youll have a very nice convertable.

I agree with Dan - get the car braced and replace/repair the sills first then work your way through the other bits.

Are you planning a full restoration or do you just want to get it good enough to use regularly?

Hi Shane thank goodness you came on the board for advice and didnt let the car go for a song and I am sure all the hard work will be worthwhile and if you need encouragement thats what the board is for :D

I agree with all the previous posters, doesn't look too far gone at all to me. Tell the guy to clear off if he bothers you again!

Good luck.
